WRITERS' MONTHLY MEET-UPS - WEA Illawarra

Face-to-face course in Wollongong (WEA Illawarra) from 11am to 2pm over these three Sundays 2 May, 30 May and 27 June.

The course is primarily a critique group for all forms of writing – poetry, prose and/or scripts – so if you have writing ready to share (up to 2000 words per session per person), this is a great opportunity to receive feedback. But if you're not quite ready to share your writing, then come along anyway and have fun reading others' work and learning new things.

If you do have writing ready to share – and don't mind it being emailed to the other participants – then send it to WritersBootCampOtford@gmail.com the week before the first class i.e. email by Sunday 25 April. WEA Illawarra is offering an early discount if you enrol by 30 April – the fee will be $102 instead of $120. Capturing (Difficult) Truth in Memoir

6 sessions, 12 hours total

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Capture your story in a way which will interest others. Learn and use preferred writing styles and techniques such as active voice and ‘show, don’t tell’. Find out why writing your memoir in chronological order only works if you are a celebrity.

  • Unravel the truth without crucifying friends or being sued by your enemies. Define what is ‘truth’ and learn why truth resonates with readers like nothing else can. Discover how to protect yourself when others argue with your version of the truth.

  • Learn when to montage moments and when to go into minute detail. Less is sometimes more and less is sometimes less. Sometimes highlighting the highs and lows is enough, while other times writing all the details, including the who, what, where, when, why and how is vital to writing a truthful story which helps others.

  • Opportunities to read your writing. Rarely do writers get an opportunity to read their difficult truth in a safe and confidential setting – this is one of those rare opportunities.

Writing Short Memoir Pieces (For Publication)

One session only.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Select a snippet from your life that will interest others – if unsure, cues will be provided. After this two hour class, all writers will be encouraged to continue working on this piece of writing (800-1000 words) and submit it to a competition such as the Reader’s Digest’s free monthly My Story competition which has a $400 prize or the NSW’s Seniors Anthology.

  • Draft your story using the stream of consciousness writing concept to initiate and grow ideas. This helps writers to remember more, allowing the story to blossom naturally.

  • Craft your story by adopting ‘show, don’t tell’ techniques to ensure the words engage and resonate with the reader. Where possible, these concepts include using remembered pieces of dialogue (or as ‘true to life’ as possible) while incorporating more of the five senses i.e. smell, taste, touch, sight and sound.
